Yet most fund management companies are owned, controlled and managed by banks, marketing institutions or other financial conglomerates. Broader corporate objectives can often conflict with the need to create a suitable environment for fund managers.

BDT Invest is owned, controlled and managed by investment professionals. Our primary objective is to create an environment within which our experienced, talented managers can do their job. Perform. We call this our performance culture - placing success in investing far above narrow, mundane business objectives.

With the industry consolidating into fewer, larger players, investment management firms seek to minimise dispersion of returns. Together with an increasingly shorter time horizon this has resulted in a frenzied focus on benchmarks and competitor peer groups. Call us old fashioned but we prefer to spend our time evaluating investment opportunities.

The dreaded "style straitjacket" is another modern day phenomenon with fund management firms keen to place themselves in readily recognisable style boxes. Market conditions, however, change and a style that worked yesterday may not work tomorrow.

We respect client mandates. Clear communication is part of that respect, as is our commitment to adopt a style appropriate to the prevailing market conditions rather than be governed by the "style straitjacket".
